George III Mahogany Chest of Drawers c.1770, from the R.W. Symonds Collection

R. W. Symonds was a well respected expert and wrote vast amounts of literature pertaining to antiques and collecting. He was a collector and a consultant to other collectors, most notably Percival Griffiths. The collection formed by Percival D. Griffiths, F.S.A (d. 1938), with Symonds providing counsel is considered to be the greatest collection of English furniture formed in the last century. It was Griffiths' collection that provided the content for Symonds' seminal work English Furniture from Charles II to George II, 1929. Many of his manuscripts are housed at the Winterthur Museum in Delaware.
